Short Term Accommodation (Respite)

Short-Term Accommodation

The NDIS offers participants the opportunity to take a break from their regular carer, develop independence, or experience a change of scenery through short-term accommodations (STA), sometimes referred to as respite. STA can take the form of facility or residential stays, help with nighttime care, or substitute family care (in which case friends or family can help to relieve the primary carer). With STA funding, the NDIS will pay for all essential costs, such as lodging, meals, activities, and personal care and support.

Both the participant and their carer benefit from STA. It gives the participant the freedom to explore new locations and experiences, push themselves beyond their comfort zones, develop their independence, unwind, and recharge. This can be a crucial first step in getting ready for the change, especially if a participant plans to leave and move into supported independent living (SIL) or specialist disability accommodation (SDA). It's a break for the carer that promotes and sustains a wholesome and happy participant-carer relationship. While caring for a loved one can be emotionally and physically taxing, it's critical that the carer take time to refuel.

For those who are caring for a loved one who has a disability, a chronic illness, or other special requirements as well as for the individual, short-term housing is an invaluable resource. STA gives carers and participants the time they need to rest and rejuvenate by offering temporary help and care. Finding the ideal STA solution is now simpler than ever because to the variety of options accessible.
